We had a snowday at school! Can you believe they didnt announce it until the morning while everyother school board/college/university cancelled the day before. I really hate that about this school, ive been here for 6 years and never have i been annoyed.
I heard a rumour that the person in-charge of calling off school for snowdays bases it on the amount of reported accidents on the 403. Can you believe that ? I do! IT explains why they ALWAYS leave it to the last minute. SO lets say there were 10 accidents on the road this morning, many commuters take the 403 to school everyday like myself. So do mac students have to get into a number of accidents or close encounters to death before someone decides "umm, i guess ill call classes off, looks like we should of done it the day before because the students who never got the news in the morning due to website crashing are probably in the ditch already".
They even put theyre own employees in danger because i know for a fact many lecturers or profs do not live in Hamilton. Id like to ask Mr. MacTavish what he thinks tomorrow.... did he get early notice?
Tomorrow in class we are discussing the digital game The Sims.
Personally i enjoyed playing Sim Tower. When The Sims were first coming to digital gaming i found them quite boring. Pobably because i was using a 386 or a 486 at the time. As i upgraded my computer got faster and the resolution changed the game entirely.
I was first hooked on Sims Tower when I built my first 100 story hotel/appartmen/condo with a skylobby on the 60th floor and everything from shopping malls to movie theaters underground. The goal is starting at a 1 STAR * rating and hopefully build it up to a 5 star hotel. Every new addition to the hotel you make brings in money so that you can continue to construct a taller or larger building. You get money from rent/hotel/theater/shopping malls/fitness clubs...
But there is a catch. Everything doesn go so smooth. You might be infested with cockroaches, noisy tenants, bad ticket sales to movies, or worse people moving out. SO you need to maintain the building as best as possible. You may even be visited by the health inspectors randomly and lose your liscence for the building.
Cool game, youll be addicted. Not a hard game to grasp either unlike the Sims Family or other simulations from Maxis.
Klines article on sim city discusses Will Wrights first Sim City. The distributor Broderbund feared it might be percived as too educational, so they added special disaster options. Jokes went around naming the newest of the Sims as Sims Osama. Wow just wow.
In class yesterday we took a look at game called Indigo Prophecy. A few of us tried it and found how to navigate through the Indigo story. This game I felt falls under the mystery/murder/adventure genre.
With this type of game we are free to move around and do what we like. But we are also on a constrain of time and actions so we are not truley free. Take your time in Indigo and you will eventualy get caught by the villans and the mystery comes to and end. One difference between the game and hypertext was that Hypertext allows readers to freely move back and forth without the pressure of moving on.
This game demonstrates how we are still under a sequence of actions and if we dont perfom them we dont succeed. Unlike hypertext, we are not able to backstep as easily unless we save levels on the game. Even though so, you dont start originally from your last place.
I will be sure to play the game a few times in the lab if Prof Andrew leaves one out for us! yay!
OK so i got some major work to do regarding my blog. My format is all over the place so maybe its time for some structure.
Last thrusdays class was good, had some interesting conversations concerning the readings. I'll put more of an effort tomorrow night because i just got back from my "boring night class".
Im really esxcited about my project with Mike...... who cant go wrong with doing sports video games for a topic!!!!!!
Shelly jacksons my body was interesting. She made a page where her drawn body acted similar to a table of contents of a book. I found myself getting lost because when you click on one body part, other links appear with that body part that you can click onto those as well. I found that her head was not labeled, maybe for cosmetic reasons. Interesting page but more of a feminist point of view.
I couldnt get my link to work for Hegirascope, maybe it will work in class....
Just got back from an Econ seminar at Mac this evening. I have regret about not approaching and introducing myself when it comes to possible job opportunities. Fortunally I rubbed elbows with the manager of real estate at the Hamilton Port Authority. There was a Economic lawyer there as well which I got reallly nervous talking to and forgot to mention a few things. There goes that job 8(
Anywho, Ive done the readings for this week in mmedia 3E so i figure maybe i should just wait from now on and listen to what others have to say in seminars and class. Its much easier to get a direction about I should discuss on this blog or maybe just stick to the notes i take.... o h well ill find out more tomorrow!
